Gingivitis is the earliest stage of gum disease; it is an inflammation of the gums usually caused by plaque buildup or some sort of bacterial infection. Gum disease, including Gingivitis, can develop at any age, but it is more common among adults. If you notice any of the following signs of Gingivitis, please
contact us or your local dentist immediately.
- Swollen, tender, or puffy gums
- Teeth that look longer due to receding gums
- Changes in the way your teeth fit together
- Gums that easily bleed when brushing or flossing
- Gum color has changed from pink to red
- Bad breath or consistent bad taste in your mouth
If Gingivitis is left untreated, it could develop into a more serious infection known as periodontitis. To prevent Gingivitis from occurring, good oral hygiene is essential.
How to Prevent Gingivitis
You can help stop gingivitis from developing by doing the following things:
- Adequate and proper brushing and flossing to remove plaque and tartar buildup
- Healthy eating to ensure proper nutrition for your jawbone and teeth
- Avoiding the use of cigarettes or other forms of tobacco
