Treat Gum Disease with Laser Power!
The technology of lasers has made many industries better, and that includes dentistry. Although it is not yet considered a proven treatment by the American Academy of Periodontology, laser gum therapy has shown promising results for many patients.
Gum disease is typically caused by poor oral hygiene, smoking, chronic illnesses such as diabetes, certain medications, and genetics. Normally, it is treated using scaling and root planing to remove tartar that causes the gum line to recede. Another option, albeit a surgical one, is gum flap surgery. This surgically removes the gum tissue to allow for a deep cleaning around the tooth’s root. The gum tissue is then sutured back into place so healing can occur.
Why Laser Therapy is Different
First and foremost, no general anesthesia is needed for laser gum therapy. Lasers can also more effectively target the problem areas, more so than scaling and root planing. As a result, bleeding, swelling, and pain are minimized because lasers are less invasive. Also, the recovery and healing period is usually shorter. Although coverage of the procedure is up to your insurance provider, laser gum therapy may actually be less expensive than traditional methods in the long run because it requires fewer office visits and less medication.
However, since lasers are lasers, the correct wavelength and power level must be used in order for laser gum therapy to be effective. At Sunrise Dental, we use our experience to precisely calibrate our lasers for each and every patient. You have nothing to worry about!
