Root Canal Treatment

Comfortable Relief from Dental Nerve Pain

What are the symptoms of a tooth infection? How do I know if I need a root canal?

Root canals are needed when the dental pulp inside of a tooth becomes infected. This infection has a few different symptoms that should be addressed immediately, if noticed.

  • Severe pain when chewing
  • Prolonged sensitivity to hot or cold
  • A persistent or recurring pimple on the gum near the tooth
  • Tenderness or swelling of the gum near the tooth
  • Discoloration of the tooth

If you have noticed any of the symptoms above, please contact one of our offices immediately. You may be in need of a root canal — the sooner we see you, the better chance we have of saving your tooth.

See What Sunrise Dental Can do for You

Inside each tooth is a strand of dental pulp, a substance that supplies the tooth with nerves, nutrients, connective tissue, and blood vessels. The dental pulp laces downward into the root. If it becomes diseased, the pulp dies, cutting off the nutrients and nerve signals that the tooth needs to be healthy. If the pulp is left in the tooth, the tooth will become infected and painful, forcing its removal.

The root canal procedure lets the dentist remove the pulp, clean the canal, and seal the tooth, effectively protecting and saving the tooth. Once the opening is created through the crown of the tooth into the dental pulp chamber, the pulp is removed. Then, the canal is cleaned out and reshaped, and the pulp chamber is filled permanently. Finally, the root canal dentist will place a crown over the saved tooth to strengthen it.

After a root canal procedure, you will no longer be able to feel any pain in that tooth. Root canal procedures aren’t scary — they are designed to eliminate your pain and help you get back to your normal life. In fact, with our modern rotary technology, the process is very gentle and virtually painless.

We offer nitrous oxide and oral sedation options for those who experience a bit of dental anxiety or fear. We can help you get the services you need to feel better.

We even try to be conscious of your time. Rather than sending you home with a temporary crown, we can mill a perfect permanent crown while you wait. CEREC technology is now exclusively available at our Raleigh office.
